Missing physical buttons in cars?

Xiaomi appears to sell a whole galaxy of products that includes a row of physical buttons (listen to that satisfying click!) that installs directly under the central display of the SU7, its newly released EV. It’s a pretty interesting approach to aftermarket sales that, as this Threads user points out, seems ripped straight from the company’s smartphone playbook.

Mastodon becomes a US nonprofit.

CEO Eugen Rochko says the fediverse app has established a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in the US in order to receive tax-deductible donations. Mastodon was previously based in Germany until the government there pulled its nonprofit status with “no advance warning or explanation,” according to Rochko. The board for the five-person US nonprofit includes Twitter cofounder Biz Stone.

X-Men ‘97 is about to become a Cable show.

Disney Plus is well on its way to becoming a cable channel, and the final trailer for X-Men ‘97 makes it feel like the series is going to be following suit given the Cable of it all.

This EV prototype charges from 10 to 80 percent almost as fast as a gas fill-up.

The prototype Polestar 5 uses an “Extreme Fast Charging” 77kWh EV pack, created in conjunction with company StoreDot, that can add 200 miles of range in 10 minutes. A Tesla would take about 15 minutes at many convenient Supercharger locations.

Polestar noted charging rates rose from 310kW at 10 percent charge to a blistering 370kW at 80 percent, and no special cooling equipment is needed.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang doesn’t mess around at Denny’s.

60 Minutes ran a segment last night on Nvidia’s ascent. It’s a solid look at how the company has become a dominant force in the AI industry.

But also, just check out this photo. Nvidia’s top boss and 60 Minutes’ Bill Whitaker know how to get after it with their Denny’s order, which I have no choice but to respect.

Oh you sweet summer Wastelander.

The Fallout TV show has everyone and their father (no seriously) wanting to try out the games. This should be great news if not for one teensy weensy little problem — these newcomers have no idea the world of Bethesda jank-flavored hurt they’re in for. Those mods? Crashed. Those textures? Never gonna display. That’s just how it goes in the Wasteland.

They made the robot hairy!

Recently we suggested Boston Dynamics should enshroud its bots in some kind of hair. Today Boston Dynamics showed off a costume for its Spot robot that is festooned in blue, sparkly fur.

I’m sure its just a coincidence, but if not, thank you for listening Boston Dynamics. The bots are indeed less terrifying when they look like giant puppet dogs or some kind of adorable CGI render.

“This should be an app.”

Dave2D aims directly at the heart of the existential problem of AI gadgets with his casual redesign of the Rabbit R1. That is, anything meaningful they do can be boiled down to an app on the smartphone that’s already in your pocket.

Here’s the first Mufasa teaser. I’m not lion.

Given the success of Disney’s “live-action” remake of The Lion King, a prequel seemed inevitable, so here we are with Mufasa. It looks a lot like the original, only this time they added an ice level and a villain voiced by Mads Mikkelsen. It hits theaters on December 20th.

Want to go to Costa Rica?

Earth Month is coming to a close, but there’s still time to catch up on The Verge’s package of stories from Costa Rica on turning cattle ranches into forests, Indigenous leaders fighting for their land back, and how the country runs on nearly 100 percent renewable electricity. On the ground in Costa Rica, we found reasons to be hopeful about solutions to climate change.

The EU is preparing to investigate Meta’s handling of disinformation.

According to Financial Times, regulators are concerned that Meta isn’t doing enough to stifle disinformation being seeded by countries like Russia in order to undermine EU elections.

Officials reportedly also believe Meta’s process for flagging illegal content isn’t “user-friendly enough to comply with the EU Digital Services Act.” The probe would apparently begin today.

Elon Musk had a productive visit to China.

Tesla restrictions set by local authorities have been lifted now that the company’s Chinese-made vehicles have passed their data security requirements, as Musk arrived in Beijing to meet with Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Sunday.

According to Reuters, the automaker has also secured a deal to use Baidu’s mapping license to collect data on Chinese roads — a key step for introducing Full Self Driving software to the country.

Google is rolling out simultaneous Android app downloads on the Play Store.

Only two at a time, though — try a third, and it’ll be pending until one of those finishes. My Pixel 6 can already do this, but Google often stages rollouts, so you may not have it just yet.

According to 9to5Google, this only applies to new downloads — app updates will still come down the internet tubes single file.

Shifting gears.

This “manual transmission pen” is a much cooler version of that pen with the multicolored ink and sliders to bring each one down that we all had in school.

Except with a functioning clutch and shifter for switching tips. It shifts into reverse for the eraser!
