Message
from West Midlands Police
West
Midlands Police is aware of deep public concern created by
a recurring rumour that is being widely circulated, not just
in the West Midlands.
This
rumour, with an implied security threat, bears all the hallmarks
of a so-called "urban myth," having no apparent
basis in fact, nor any evidence to support it.
West
Midlands Police Chief Constable, Sir Edward Crew, has repeated
his earlier message that people should be reassured that there
is NO intelligence to suggest there is any specific threat
to the West Midlands.
Latest
advice from the Government is that some media coverage has
been alarmist and has heightened public concern in these worrying
times. The Government is also re-emphasising there has been
NO specific threat to the UK, but urges people to be vigilant
.
West
Midlands Police is in the process of distributing thousands
of letters, leaflets and posters across the force area to
explain what we are doing and to offer reassurance to the
public. We have been utilising our existing close links with
community leaders as part of this process.
We
have heightened the police presence on the streets throughout
the force area and we are paying particular attention to potentially
vulnerable buildings. This is to offer the public reassurance
that we are here to help and support you - not because there
is any specific threat.
Again,
the message from West Midlands Police is clear - there is
NO evidence of a direct threat to this region, but people
should be alert and vigilant.
Anyone
with information on the activities of those intent on causing
fear and violence should contact the anti-terrorist hotline
on 0800 789321. West Midlands Police can be contacted on 0845
113 5000.
