Goldstone Radar Observations Planning: 2009 FD and 2015 TB145

2009 FD
2009 FD will approach within 0.0419 au (16.3 lunar distances) on 2015 October 29.
This object should yield SNRs at Goldstone strong enough for ranging and perhaps coarse-resolution imaging.
SNRs at Arecibo should be strong enough for imaging at 7.5 m resolution.
2009 FD first noticed by the La Sagra Sky Survey on in March 2009, but precovery observations
were also found in data from Spacewatch data from February 24, 2009. The Minor Planet Center credits
both search programs with the discovery.
Observations by NASA's Wide Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) spacecraft yielded a diameter of 0.47 km
and very low optical albedo of 0.01. Arecibo radar observations in 2014 suggest the diameter is closer
to 0.3 km and that the optical albedo is ~0.03, which is still unusually dark. The SNRs of the 2014 Arecibo
observations were low and did not provide delay-Doppler images.
Carbognani et al. (2011) reported a rotation period of 5.87 h and a lightcurve amplitude of 0.24 mag that
suggests a shape with a low pole-on elongation. Koehn et al. (2014) obtained lightcurves that placed a lower
bound on the rotation period of 6.22 h but they were unable to obtain a unique solution.
The SNRs of the observations in 2015 will be orders of magnitude stronger than in 2014 and should
allow us to resolve the different estimates of the diameter and rotation period. If the observations
at Goldstone and Arecibo go well, it should be possible to estimate the asteroid's 3D shape.
To the best of our knowledge the spectral class is unknown, but it's clear that this is object is optically-dark.
2009 FD will remain very faint and too close to the Sun for optical observations until late October.
Afterward it will be at favorable solar elongations and at a maximum visual magnitude of about 18
when photometry with meter-class (and larger) telescopes could be possible.
Plane-of-sky pointing, Doppler, and time delay uncertainties for 2009 FD are small and no additional
optical astrometry is necessary prior to the 2015 radar observations.
2009 FD is not classified as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid" because its absolute magnitude is slightly fainter
than the cutoff of 22. WISE and radar observations discussed above show that the diameter is probably at least
300 meters, so it's large enough to be "potentially hazardous" even though it isn't classified as such.
2015 TB145
2015 TB145 was discovered on 2015 Oct 10 by the Pan-STARRS I survey. The object will approach the Earth
within 0.00326 au (1.3 Lunar distances or about 490 000 km) on 2015 Oct 31 at about 17:00 UT (10 AM PDT).
The asteroid is in an extremely eccentric (~0.86) and
high inclination (~40 deg) orbit. It has a Tisserand parameter of 2.937 hinting that it may be
cometary in nature. Its absolute magnitude of 19.8 indicates that its diameter is probably within a factor of two
of 320 meters. At closest approach the SNRs/run at DSS-14 are expected to be over 20000, so this should
be one of the best radar targets of the year. We hope to obtain images with a range resolution as high
as 2 m/pixel using DSS-13 to transmit and Green Bank and Arecibo to receive. The flyby presents
a truly outstanding scientific opportunity to study the physical properties of this object.
The encounter velocity is 35 km/s, which is unusually high.
This is the closest approach by a known object this large until 1999 AN10 approaches within 1 lunar distance
in August 2027. The last approach closer than this by an object with H < 20 was by 2004 XP14 in July 2006 at
1.1 lunar distances.
2015 TB145 could reach 10th magnitude before sunrise on October 31 for observers in North America, but it
will be close to the waning gibbous Moon and probably challenging to see with small telescopes.
The asteroid will be in Ursa Major at the time of closest approach. After closest approch 2015 TB145 will be a daytime object
and too close to the Sun to observe with optical telescopes.
Radar observations are planned at DSS-14, DSS-13, Arecibo, Green Bank, and elements of the VLBA. Monostatic observations
are also scheduled at the 46 m UHF radar at Haystack (led by Juha Vierenen). The 18 m Westford antenna at Haystack may
also be used to receive Goldstone transmissions. 13 m antennas at Badary and Zelenchukskaya (Russia) may also be used to receive
C-band transmissions from DSS-13 on October 31 in collaboration with Yuri Bondarenko et al. at the Quasar VLBI network.

2009 FD Based on the rotation period and estimated diameter, we are expecting a bandwidth of about 6 Hz if the view is close to equatorial. The CW setup below will boost chances for seeing an echo quickly, estimating a Doppler correction, and resolving the echo in Doppler frequency.
