Polio Vaccine Not Safe For Kenyan Children - Catholic Church Warns Govt

The Catholic church is threatening to go to court unless the government suspends an upcoming countrywide polio vaccination campaign scheduled for Saturday August 1, 2015 over safety concerns.

The Catholic church, with over 12 million faithful Kenya is also demanding that the government agrees to a joint testing of the polio vaccine supplied by World Health Organisation.

The vaccination drive was set to begin on Thursday, July 30, 2015 although the ministry of Health has so far dismissed the threats by the Catholic church.

The church holds that the polio vaccine is unsafe for children even as the ministry insists that it intends to curb increased cases of polio outbreaks in the country.

Not first time

Njue demanded that the government agrees to a joint testing before, during and after the vaccination drive to guarantee safety of the vaccine.

In January this 2015, the Catholic church differed sharply with the ministry of Health over a tetanus jab for expectant women and girls.

The church claimed that tests had found that the vaccine contained traces of a hormone that causes infertility.
