In stereoscopic circles, Warren de la Rue is best known for this beautiful series of lunar stereographs.
But this is just a very small part of the huge contribution that this man made to science in the 1850s. And here, by kind permission of David le Conte, is a glimpse, from a Carte de Visite, of this great Victorian, around 1862, showing Mr. de la Rue at the age of about 47 (not in 3-D, sadly, though there may possibly be a stereo version out there somewhere). It's nice to see that the photograph was published by the London Stereoscopic Company, the inspiration for this website and our modern-day company, dedicated to stereoscopy.
