And who is Warren de la Rue ?

In stereoscopic circles, Warren de la Rue is best known for this beautiful series of lunar stereographs.

But this is just a very small part of the huge contribution that this man made to science in the 1850s.   We're now happy to be able to direct you to a very comprehensive paper on his life and work, written by David le Conte, a modern son of Guernsey, the land that Warren hailed from.  Click below to see the page in the "Antiquarian Astronomer" where this paper features as a sample work:

..  or this link below, to download the excellent PDF.   I can't imagine there will ever be a better biography of Warren de la Rue than this.

And here, by kind permission of David le Conte, is a glimpse, from a Carte de Visite, of this great Victorian, around 1862, showing Mr. de la Rue at the age of about 47 (not in 3-D, sadly, though there may possibly be a stereo version out there somewhere).   It's nice to see that the photograph was published by the London Stereoscopic Company, the inspiration for this website and our modern-day company, dedicated to stereoscopy.

All respects to Warren de la Rue !
