Feels Nice In My Hand, Not Reliable Like Gen 1 This Replaced, Like The Microphone In This Model
I mostly like this "gen 2" FireTV game controller. It feels nice in my hands, the controls are responsive, the microphone added in this model is convenient, and the batteries seem to last a little better. This would be a solid 5 stars, but for what I feel is a very annoying problem. The one I got seems to have lapses on both joy sticks. What I mean is I'll move the stick and nothing will happen. Sometimes for several seconds or till I re-center the stick and try again. This is not frequent but it seems to mostly happen at the worst times.I got this to replace my original (gen 1?) FireTV controller that I got for my original Fire TV in 2014. That old one lasted a very long time before one of the buttons broke and till then was always reliable. This one plays a little better when not acting-up, but when it does...All considered this is a very nice game controller. The mic is a nice addition and it feels nice in my hands. Maybe it's just mine but rare or not loss of response in the controls is pretty bad even if it rarely happens. I'll probably ask Amazon for a replacement, but till then I can't give this the 5 stars I would like, but only 3. Reliability issues are just too much of a spoiler for me.
I purchased the Amazon Fire TV Game Controller, and I must say it has been a game-changer for my entertainment experience. As a Fire TV Stick user, I was looking for a way to enhance my gaming sessions, and this controller did not disappoint.
First and foremost, the controller is incredibly comfortable to hold, with a well-designed ergonomic grip that allows for hours of gaming without any discomfort. The buttons are responsive and have a satisfying click to them, making gameplay smooth and enjoyable.
One of the standout features of this controller is its compatibility with the Fire TV Stick. It seamlessly connects to the device, eliminating any hassle of setup. I was able to jump right into my favorite games without any delay, and the connection remained stable throughout my gaming sessions.
Another aspect I appreciated was the built-in voice search button. It's a convenient feature that allowed me to quickly search for games and apps using my voice, making navigation a breeze. Plus, the controller's integrated headphone jack allowed for private gaming without disturbing others in the room.
Overall, the Amazon Fire TV Game Controller has significantly enhanced my Fire TV Stick gaming experience. It's a must-have accessory for any Fire TV Stick user who enjoys gaming. I couldn't be happier with my purchase, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to elevate their gaming sessions with a reliable and comfortable controller.
I read J's review and it almost made me not buy the controller. I'm glad I ignored his review and gave it a shot anyway. I had 0 problems with my D pad and the buttons feel pretty darn responsive to me. It's basically an Xbox controller and feels like it, just maybe not quite as "refined", and I mean that from a purely aesthetic prospective. Functionally, it works just as well. While I'm a casual gamer, I am a gamer and have several consoles ranging from old school Nintendo to PS4/Xbox One and have played on pretty much every console that has come out with a few exceptions. This controller is just as good as an Xbox or Play Station controller, though I more closely liken it to the Xbox controller because of the physical shape. It paired instantly, is super responsive with no perceivable lag, the buttons are crisp yet easy to press... I have no complaints whatsoever. It's a great piece of hardware and is definitely worth the 50 bucks.
I have the original Nvidia Shield TV (not the latest 2017 version) and as such, I also have the older/bulkier controller that it came with. While it works alright, I was never that happy with it just because it's so large and clunky (I have smaller hands) and never got all that comfortable with it. So, I went searching for a replacement controller to use with it...
Along came the 2017 Shield TV and a newly revamped controller. Looks nice, got good reviews, but at this time, almost impossible to find one new or used for under $50 which is a bit more than I wanted to pay for a controller.
I found the Amazon Fire TV controller searching around and wondered if it would work with the Shield. Turns out that the AFT controller is NOT bluetooth, but rather, Wi-Fi direct. Did a little more research and a few random searches led me to believe that you could indeed use this controller with a Shield TV.
Since it's not bluetooth, trying to pair this controller with the Shield (or any other bluetooth device) is impossible. But, at the suggestion of someone on an Nvidia forum, if you go into the Shield's settings and go to the add Shield Accessory setting, while holding the "home" button on the AFT controller, after a few moments, indeed, it does connect and it does work. It doesn't show up as a Shield accessory (since technically, it's not) so it's kinda weird that way. Nowhere will you see in the Shield's settings or options that the controller is even connected.
After connecting or "pairing" the AFT controller with my Shield I noticed that I lost all sound and audio. The AFT controller microphone works, but it basically caused me to lose all sound on my Shield. Needless to say that bummed me out. I tried connecting headphones to the 1/8" jack on the AFT controller and nothing. I assume what is happening is that the Shield is seeing the controller as not only a controller, but as an audio device and is trying to route all audio through the controller. Not being an actual Shield accessory, there's not going to be any drivers in the Shield's OS so basically you are left with a functioning controller but with no audio.
So...I tried doing some forum searching and digging to see if anyone else had run into the same problem, and alas, I was able to find a few mentions of people connecting the AFTV 2nd Gen controller to their Shield TV units and also losing all audio. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything beyond that. No solutions, no real follow-ups.
I was thinking well, I guess I will return it because as nice as the controller feels in the hands, I don't want to play games in silence. Then I thought about something and a light bulb went off. Shield runs on a proprietary/modified version of Android. That being said, I figured, like any other Android OS, there is probably a way to access/turn on Developer Options in the settings. Sure enough, when you tap Build Number 7 times, you turn on Developer Mode in the Shield. As a last ditch effort, I went looking through all the options in the Developer menu to see if there would be something that might get audio to work with this controller. Near the bottom of the options list there is a setting that says something along the lines of "don't force audio routing through USB devices" or something like that. It was off. I turned it on, restarted the Shield, re-connected the AFT controller and wouldn't you know it, audio! The microphone in the AFT controller no longer works now, but I could care less. I have no desire to talk to my devices and I never use voice searches or features. But, the controller in all other regards works great and I have sound. I find the D-pad to be a little "sticky" at times and maybe not quite as precise as the D-pad on the Shield controller, but overall and otherwise, I basically will be using this controller as my main controller with my Shield for now on. It simply fits in my hands much better, is less bulky and weighty and is just more comfortable and mainly works very well.
I picked up the AFT controller for $26 refurbished here on Amazon and I am very happy with that price point. Just in case anyone is wondering, I can also use the Shield controller at the same time as the AFT controller so it's not like the AFT controller kicks the Shield controller out. I rarely need to have two controllers in use at a time, but it's nice to know I can if I need to. Quite a few people on here have complained about this controller eating batteries, and while I haven't tested that, I figured it's better to be safe so whenever I am done using it, I pop one of the AA batteries out of the back so it can't drain itself sitting there trying to connect to things that aren't even on. I kind of wish this controller had a rechargeable battery like the Shield controller, but AA batteries are pretty cheap and I have a bunch of NiMH AA batteries so it's not that big of a deal. Between that and the rather vague/somewhat mushy at times D-pad I took one star off. If the D-pad was as precise as some other controllers I have used over the years and they either added an power switch and/or made it rechargeable, it would be a perfect 5 stars.
