macbook pro 2019 entry level battery issues

2019 macbook pro entry level 13inch with touchbar.
8GB/1.4GHz

Am i doing something wrong? My first macbook, so dont know much about them.

it comes fully charged on 100%, so i use it as normal (not charging it) gets to about 25% and just cuts out. Only turns back on if i put the charger in. Battery shows as 0% then jumps back up to 25% happened 4 times.
Obviously took it to the apple store and they exchanged it for a new one.

Exact same thing happens again. This time it shows as 0% and has a service battery sign, after about 2 minutes jumps back up to about 30% with no service battery sign.

There might be strange going on with early production entry model battery.
What is your machine serial numbers 1th, 4th and 5th character? That shows just manufacturing factory and date.

I'm having that issue and I'm wondering should I return my machine and rebuy, but in case new units may be suffering from the same, I'm puzzled. Mine is dropping capacity under high load. It is also increasing battery charge cycles around every 80% or so percent of actual use (charge cycle should be 0-100%, or any partial like 2 x 50-100% but that is not the case with mine). Both of these things should not happen in brand new unit.

Serial number, 1st 4th and 5th character is CYQ

This is not normal.

Take it to an Apple Store or certified repair place. Or just return and exchange it.

It’s not normal. Did you explain this to the people at Apple when you exchanged it?

You can download Cinebench from author directly at (just select download directly from Maxon): https://www.maxon.net/en/products/cinebench-r20-overview/
CoconutBattery from here: https://coconut-flavour.com/coconutbattery/

Just download them and then open Coconut and check full charge capacity and current charge (write down values).

Then run Cinebench (just select run button in Cinebench) and while it is running bring coconut on top to see how values start to change when benchmark is running (values are updated only about once per minute, so it takes a little while to see what happens). Again note values for full charge capacity and current charge and keep taking readings.

After Cinenebench test is completed wait and see how coconut values keep changing after that and write them down. Please post your results.

Was serial number in unit you returned 1st, 4th and 5th character the same as in new unit?
Not sure it is getting better unless you can find unit that has been manufactured just within last couple of weeks. Mine is already newer than yours and still suffering from capacity loss under high load.

Obviously if your replacement has the same problem and it is not from the same batch, it might be something else.

It is already about battery problems in entry MBP. There are instructions what readings to take.

I just noticed that you mentioned your first unit coming with 100% charged battery. It sound like it should have been very recently build unit, as battery will lose some capacity every day it is stored. Or another reason is that unit was manufactured longer time ago but battery value was not updating and it simply lost count of actual charge level.
I've seen that happening sometimes with my other non Apple brand laptops when I have not been using one for 1-2 months.

Probably SMC and/or NVRAM reset should fix that wrong reading issue.

I did SMC reset on the first one I had but still happened. Just tried it on the replacement and gonna see if it cuts out again when the battery drops later

I did but because I only had it 2 days they just straight up exchanged it. Didn't bother look into/try and resolve the problem

That's a real crummy problem to have--twice! But it's certainly not normal.

Must be something else than faulty machine. Two times is a row the same issue is uncommon. Unless there is something peculiar with batteries.

I would say that this is a common issue with these mid 2019 machines. I would recommend returning it and either purchasing a 2019 MBA or early 2019 MBP as a replacement.

Common issue? I haven't seen anyone besides us two talking about battery issues, and even in my case I've been concerned about capacity drop under load (which who knows is just something feature this particular model has for some reason) and this turning off before 0% can be from many reasons too (I've seen that happening in my Windows notebooks when they have been stored for long time unused, battery loses capacity but battery metes still think it is the same level it was when used last time and then turns off suddenly when meter still show capacity left. Since that machine passed high load battery test easily hard to say what causes that. Bad battery would very likely shut down right away when you suddenly draw 40watts.

Does not sound like widespread.

I would not consider MBA to replace MBP, sure 2.4 model is upgrade but depending on where you live it is easily +50% or so more price.

I didn't note down the serial number on the 1st one but the 1st 4th and 5th character on the 3rd macbook is CYV?

Same issue for me, New out of the box 2019 13" MBP Cuts out after hitting 45% of battery. This is my second MBP within 10 days. For the first MacBook, cuts out at 35% and now new MacBook cuts out at 45%. SMC reset didn't work, no hardware failure detection at apple store. Haven't tried resetting NVRAM and PRAM.

What is the config of your machine CPU/RAM/SSD?
Could you check/report the battery manufacturer using Coconut Battery?

Cpu was the 1.4 Ghz entry model with touchbar. 8 gb of ram and 256gb ssd

Are you referring to battery or machine manufacturing date? Coconut shows individual dates for both parts.

Have you tested if your battery dips a lot under load?

Will check the manufacture date later but in terms of dropping under load, i've gone to the apple store to show first hand that it does shut down at a specific percentage. I charged to a 100% and then to discharge as fast as possible, I opened a bunch of grapher 3-d renders, max brightness, used the yes>null dev command in terminal to run all my cores, max brightness etc, It went from 100-35% within 30 min.

Thank God it wasn't just me, Ive been so wary downloading stuff because I assumed I may have been doing something wrong. My first one cut out at 25%, second one cut out at 45%

I'm on my 3rd and managed to reach 17% before charging it, so I think this one may be ok?

I'm on my 3rd one as well. However all of my 3 are made from the same location. Maybe it's this lot that is affected

Just received it today, haven't gotten to check it yet. If this does cut out, I'm going to request another macbook from a totally different manufacturing country hopefully, using the serial numbers.
