MS-DOS Application: Microsoft Windows 3.1
- Publication date
- 1993-06-01
Windows 3.1x (codenamed Janus) is a series of 16-bit operating systems, produced by Microsoft for use on personal computers. The series began with Windows 3.1, which was first sold during April 1992 as a successor to Windows 3.0. Subsequent versions were released between 1992 and 1994 until the series was superseded by Windows 95. During its lifespan, Windows 3.1 introduced various enhancements to the still MS-DOS-based platform, including improved system stability, expanded support for multimedia, TrueType fonts, and workgroup networking.
Windows 3.1 was originally released on April 6, 1992; official support for Windows 3.1 ended on December 31, 2001, and OEM licensing for Windows for Workgroups 3.11 on embedded systems continued to be available until November 1, 2008

Windows 3.11 is an amazing work thing. remote acsses to the internet was amazing even thouh im runing it on my school computer. i find it amazing and its better than a pile of trash chrome os im runing it on. think its amazing
i like netscape i searched in google
and not bing this shows how softwere has changed ever since
the second world war.
for example are ways of machen have changed ever since the 1800s. for example the first ocean liner disaster that was the worst was the artic. then anlantic. then Rms titanic.
for Pcs? well thanks to germany and all involved in ww2 new anvancements in technolegy happend this helped make ibm.
and that means microsoft would be formed in 1975.
see stuff changed from 1800 to 1993! and also how the y2k bug works

Subject: Very useful.
Subject: Very useful.
Although this is actually Windows 3.11 for workgroups, it is still working great. There are some minor issues with it, but I will get into those later. Pardon my language, but I find this thing way more useful than the pile of shit that is ChromeOS. Because instead of going through the process of waiting for Google Documents to load, you can just pull up Write and start typing with little to no wait time, making note-taking and remembering things for later very easy. It's like the box says, "Makes your PC easier to use!" This proves that emulation when using a 30 year-old operating system can still make it useful. You don't need one of those dinosaur computers. Also, there is way more you can do on there than I thought. But here comes the minor issues I was going to talk about. One, occasionally when I start to type something in Write, I get huge lag spikes. (It could just be my school laptop) And also, the internet can't properly be set up. The chord sound is missing from the files, but that's not really that important. All those aside, great take on Windows 3.11. I'll be using this thing a lot. Have a great day.

ANYONE.
IT's working. just run the dosox.conf file with DOSBox.exe,
and when it loads up it will say "bad filename: dosbox.conf"
Just ignore it and type WIN into command field.

This is a clusterhump. Firstly, win.bat has bad paths. I have to start win.com manually. The first time I did, it gave me error messages about files missing and that I should check the paths. I looked at the paths and files were all present, in the right paths. Then it didn't do anything more, I just stayed in Dosbox. Second time I tried win.com it gave me the same thing, but then it actually started Win3.1, and told me a bunch of groups couldn't be loaded. When I finally ran The even more incredible machine on it, which was the reason I tried this in the first place, the graphics were just a garble and there was no sound. Who the hell put this emulator together?

Subject: ZIP archive is a scam
Subject: ZIP archive is a scam
The emulator works well on this website, however the ZIP file is a scam.
I investigated it carefully and came to the conclusion that it is a silly joke by some teenage wannabe h4x0r.
The archive actually includes most of what is presented in the browser emulator, however WIN.COM is a player that displays the Windows 3.11 splash screen that plays two MODEM dialing out sound files.
First of all, I have no freaking Dialup MODEM anymore, it's 2017 for crying out loud!
So this is when my suspicion already started.
Yet I thought about a faulty configuration, which wasn't the case.
Then I investigated the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and subdirectories.
The NE2000 directory is missing, so is WINPCKT. Which are referred to in the Batchfile.
Meaning: the packet driver is missing and not loaded.
My advice, play with it in the browser emulator, but don't download the ZIP file. It's pathetic!

Subject: Deleting Trumpet?
Trumpet keeps crashing my emulator and I'm never going to use it, but I'm unsure how to remove it and still be able to start up in Dosbox with WIN.BAT. I've tried deleting the folder and uninstalling it through Windows 3.1 but either way the missing directory crashes the emulator.

I ran this zip file through several virus checkers, and it came up clean. Here's what I think happened.
This version of Windows is configured with Trumpet Winsock, which is how Windows users used to dial in to their ISP. It's configured to "dial in" to a virtual ISP that runs in AWS.
When you downloaded it and ran it in native DOSBox, this initiated an outgoing connection on port 12347, which your malware detection saw as suspicious activity.
The window hung because it was unable to establish a connection, and because old Windows software was notoriously bad at handling failure cases like this.

Subject: Virus?
I extracted the file, and my eset anti-virus popped up claiming that one of the unpacked files was a trojan. The file was ".../win31/TRUMPET/WINAPPS/TRUMPINg.EXE".
I ignored the claim for the moment, and decided to launch the WIN.BAT file with DOSBox. It immediately opened countless windows inside the Windows 3.1 emulation, than it opened another one that said it was dialing something. It took a while to get it to close. Alt-F4 did not work, I had to press the Windows 8 start button, go back to the desktop and end the process with task manager.
I do not think this file is trustworthy.
