Hello Lindenbaum,

I've just got rid of it by:

  1. Using Finder to go to "Library/LaunchAgents" and moving the most recently added and suspicious looking file to the bin.
  2. Did the same here "Library/LaunchDemons"
  3. And here "~Library/LaunchAgents"
  4. I also went to "Applications" and sorted by most recently added to see if anything suspicious has been added, and removed that.
  5. Then I restarted my Mac and it's fixed!

Good luck!

From preliminary investigation, this appears to be a false positive of some kind. A number of other printer drivers and some Amazon software (Amazon Music, Amazon Workspaces) are also affected. This is only happening on Catalina and (probably, though unconfirmed) Mojave. These do not appear to be malicious.

It's still uncertain exactly what is causing the problem, but please don't go ripping things out of your systems willy-nilly! Do not remove launch agents or daemons if you don't know what they are, as that can break legitimate software.

If you're affected, search for information on how to properly uninstall the software in question. For example, for HP software, look for an HP-provided uninstaller, or contact HP support for assistance with removing it. Be sure to use resources only on the HP website, such as support.hp.com, to avoid getting scammed. (Googling for "HP support" is likely to connect you with a scammer.) The same goes for Amazon, etc.

Hopefully, this situation will be resolved. We at Malwarebytes are still investigating and have been in communication with Apple, who is also investigating.

I solved this and the inability to print by following these steps exactly:

Go to 123.hp.com

Do NOT put in your printer type, instead use the "My device is not listed" link. This takes you to a more generalized tool to download.

Click the Download button. The application "HP Easy Start" version 2.9.3 will download.

Open this app... do NOT go beyond the first screen. Instead, look under the HP Easy Start menu next to the Apple menu, and select and choose "Uninstall HP Software..."

This launches the Uninstaller. Click Continue. Then it takes quite a while to remove all HP files.

When it's done, there is a button to relaunch HP Easy Start, called "Set Up New Device". Click that.

This time "Agree" and hit the Continue button. Make sure of the listed things on the next screen and click Continue.

Select your printer (mine is a printer on the network, it just shows up by its name, e.g. "Anubis") and click Continue.

Click "Install" in the next panel. The 'essential' software is downloaded, and permission must be given to proceed with installing.

Installation seems to take a long time. When it is done click Continue.

At this point you can set up Status and Alerts. I don't know what happens if you do, I just skipped that step by clicking Continue.

In the next panel, click "Add Device..." button. That doesn't take long. Then click "Print Test Page".

If you are lucky like me that page prints. Click Continue. Next is to set up online access things. I didn't really want that, so when I clicked the "Continue Online..." button I did NOT click the "Register My Printer" button in the web page that opened. You might want to.

I confirmed that printing from an app actually works, and then restarting the computer did NOT result in the "damage" warning.

YAY.

Worked on a Catalina iMac and a Mohave MacBook Air.

I am having the same problem. When I looked in the Lanchagents and launchdaemons folders I could only find files with the offending name that were created in 2017. But I wonder whether this is beside the point. Has anyone else noticed that there is another thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251948836

asking if 'hpPostProcessing.bundle' is malware?. There are a whole lot of complaints about other messages popping up and problems with using HP printers which have been posted today. One suggestion points to the fact that 32-bit applications (including Drivers) are no longer supported in Catalina. Another suggests the security certificate was revoked by Apple.

Whatever the backstory, it seems likely that underneath this is a compatibility issue. So the big question is why has this happened and why haven't HP and Apple fixed it?

loribarns,

Step 1)

Do this;

Here's what I did to solve this PER the HP website;

1) Open Finder

2) Click the "GO" menu and select "Go to Folder"

3) paste "~/Library/LaunchAgents" in (do NOT omit the tilde "~" or else you go to the WRONG place)

4) Find "com.hp.devicemonitor.plist" and REMOVE it - right click and select "move to trash"

5) Reboot - boom the problem is gone.<---- REMEMBER TO DO THIS

then

Install the HP Smart application to make sure your printer still works;

Some have written that "HP Printer Software Update 5.1" appeared in Software Update; it did not for me. Similarly, the solution above (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251948941?answerId=253720748022#253720748022) downloads the HP Easy Start version 2.9.3 to install the software; my printers are old enough that HP Easy Start cannot find software drivers for them.

The solution that worked for me is to use the link above to remove existing HP Printer software and then manually download and install the HP Printer Essentials:

1. Follow the instructions at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251948941?answerId=253720748022#253720748022 to delete the the existing HP printer software (it will also remove the print queues):

1a. Go to 123.hp.com

1b. Do NOT put in your printer type, instead use the "My device is not listed" link. This takes you to a more generalized tool to download.

1c. Click the Download button. The application "HP Easy Start" version 2.9.3 will download.

1d. Open this app... do NOT go beyond the first screen. Instead, look under the HP Easy Start menu next to the Apple menu, and select and choose "Uninstall HP Software..."

1e. This launches the Uninstaller. Click Continue. Then it takes quite a while to remove all HP files.

2. If you want to try using HP Easy Start to install the HP printer drivers, continue following the direction from the link above. If HP Easy Start does not find your printer, or it does not find current software for your printer, then see step 3 instead.

3. Download ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/HP_Quick_Start/osx/Installations/Essentials/hp-printer-essentials-S-5_14_8_4.pkg

4. Double click on the resulting hp-printer-essentials-S-5_14_8_4.pkg file and install as normal.

5. Then go to System Preferences -> Printers... and hit the "+" button to create a new printer.

Hi Steve,

I have an older HP printer too, so Easy Start will not work in this case. What I have done is download the HP drivers from the Apple site at https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1888?locale=en_US . I then installed the drivers and added back the printer through Preferences>Printers & Scanners and it worked.

Note: I take the policy of always keeping the installation packages of the software that I installed successfully on my computer in a separate folder, so I can always revert to those "safe" versions. I went to check it and the driver version now available through the Apple support site is the same that I have installed previously, however, the installation certificate that comes within the package has been renewed, and that is what is really causing the problem. So, I recommend you download a fresh package from Apple even if you have the older one stored somewhere.

Oct 29, 2020 12:17 PM in response to John Scott1

The issue is definitely caused by the installation certificate (which is part of the driver's package) being revoked. If you have a newer HP printer, the solution through the Easy Start app will work. If you have an older printer, as I do, I recommend you download a fresh driver package from the Apple site at https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1888?locale=en_US . I would also suggest that you completely remove your old drivers before installing this one. It worked for me.

I think I told him to turn off his printer and then to delete the printer from his System Preferences > Printers & Scanners. Also, I may have told him to check in Finder > Go to Folder ... /Library/Printers and delete the HP printer folder. Then somebody said to use this link which I did to download the software: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1888?locale=en_US

That post date on that link is from 2017, but I had dad install the software, restart his Mac, and turn on his printer at which point I think it asked to add the printer in System Preferences > Printers & Scanners ... which he did. I don't even know which HP printer he has. He tested the printer and the scanner and everything worked with Catalina, but I don't know if it will still be fixed after installing Big Sur??

I have an old HP Laserjet 1012, MacOS Catalina and had the same issue. I contacted HP and they sent me this link. I first removed the printer in my preferences, downloaded the drivers files at the link provided, then installed the printer again. While I did get a pop up about legacy software that may not run in the future during the installation, everything seems to be working fine right now.

My friend had this issue as well and the answer above did NOT solve the issue.

I was able to fix the issue and get her HP printer working again.

Here are the steps I took:

  1. Uninstall all HP printer software.
  2. Click the "show in finder" button in the popup which takes you to the .framework files.
  3. Delete all HP .framework files
  4. Go to the App Store and download the HP Smart App (which is their latest driver and control set) and let it search for your printer.
  5. Fixed!

P.S. Her printer was the Envy 7640, I don't know if this will work on all (especially older) HP Printers.

I also heard from Apple Support that the Amazon Music App has been creating the same problem. It all stems from Apple's new security features in Catalina that cause older drivers to be seen as threats.

Good luck all!

I have stopped the annoying pop up but haven't yet tried to print. So this fix might have consequences that I have not found yet. I am no IT expert so treat with care. But at least i can use my iMac again.

I am using macOPS Catalina 10.15.7

  1. Within System Preferences I deleted all printers
  2. I deleted all sub folders that referred to HP at

Library/Frameworks/Printers/HP/Framworks/ xxx where xxx is every HP sub folder

3 Probably best to save elsewhere on a USB stick or external drive the deleted HP sub folders in case there is a

need to reinstall them, especially if there is a proper fix issued
